Microsoft: GitHub Copilot Autonomous Agent Mode — AI Writes, Tests, and Commits Feature Branches in Sandboxed Containers

GitHub announced Copilot Autonomous Agent Mode at Build 2026, available to Enterprise customers starting July 2026. The agent writes, tests, and commits entire feature branches inside ephemeral Linux containers (Agent Sandbox) — no access to production repos until a human reviewer merges the PR. A new GitHub Compliance Scanner checks generated code against security and licensing policies before PRs open. Copilot Workspace is now GA alongside it. This is GitHub's clearest bet that AI agents can own the full code-to-PR workflow.
