Microsoft Debuts MAI-Thinking-1 — First In-House Reasoning Model Announced at Build 2026

Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman introduced MAI-Thinking-1 at Build 2026, Microsoft's first reasoning-focused AI model developed entirely without model distillation from other labs' models. The model is targeted primarily at enterprise customers and marks a significant milestone in Microsoft's strategy to build its own frontier model capabilities independent of OpenAI. Additional MAI models announced include MAI-Image-2.5, MAI-Voice-2, and MAI-Transcribe-1.5 with GA pricing expected when they ship in Microsoft Foundry.
