Epic Ships Unreal Engine 5.8 With an MCP Server Inside the Editor, Letting Claude and Codex Drive the Engine
Epic Games released Unreal Engine 5.8 on June 17, 2026 at Unreal Fest Chicago with experimental MCP server support embedded directly in the Editor process. Any MCP-compatible agent — Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, or the MCP Inspector — can drive the editor over local HTTP to spawn actors, configure lighting, build material instances, generate PCG cities, and run automation tests. It is the first major game engine to expose its editor as MCP tools, though Epic flags the feature as incomplete and subject to change.
