GitHub Copilot Coding Agent for Jira Public Preview: AI Autonomously Implements Jira Issues as GitHub Draft PRs With Clarifying Question Loop
GitHub launched a public preview on March 5 allowing any Jira issue to be assigned directly to the GitHub Copilot coding agent, which then reads the issue description and comments, implements changes autonomously in a GitHub repo, and opens a draft pull request — posting status updates back into Jira via an agent panel. When the agent needs disambiguation, it posts clarifying questions in Jira rather than stalling, enabling async human-in-the-loop review without interrupting the agent's work. This closes the project management → code → PR loop without developer context-switching and represents GitHub's push to make Copilot the default autonomous execution layer for issue-driven development.
