Practitioner Report: Codex Rebased Against main Instead of the Target Branch and Produced a 4,000-Line PR
In the same 21 August 2026 post, Ghinda documents a specific stacked-branch failure: with branch A targeting branch B targeting main, asking Codex to rebase caused it to rebase against main, producing a PR with 4,000+ additions, and he had to name the target branch explicitly. He also reports Codex handled Jira and Atlassian badly when using the CLI tool rather than an MCP, bouncing between browser login and CLI, while preferring Codex's explicit `codex mcp login` flow over Claude Code sometimes attempting MCP auth mid-turn and hanging. Single-source and anecdotal, but the stacked-branch failure is cheap to guard against with an explicit rebase target.
