IIHS Puts Waymo at 68% Fewer Crashes Over 50 Million Driverless Miles Against 222 Billion Human Miles
IEEE Spectrum published a September 8, 2026 roundup of autonomous vehicle safety data centered on a July 2026 IIHS study comparing Waymo's Jaguar I-PACE fleet over 50 million driverless miles against 222 billion human-driven miles in San Francisco, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Austin. Waymo showed 68% fewer crashes overall, with wide city variance (76% lower in Phoenix, 71% in LA, 35% in San Francisco) and 81% fewer injury crashes per mile. Waymo's own figures across 20 million paid rides and 220 million miles claim 92% fewer fatal or serious-injury crashes and 96% fewer injury crashes at intersections. The city spread is the honest caveat most coverage omits.
