Shopify engineer Mustafa Ali wrote on September 10 that "LLMs changed one of the core assumptions behind our 2020 decision" to go all-in on React Native. Six engineers rebuilt the Shop app as a fully native app and shipped it to the stores in 12 weeks using Helix, an internal system that splits a port into small checkpoints. Each checkpoint has to pass tests, a visual diff against the running app, two adversarial agent reviewers and a human sign-off. The 300+ screen Shopify app is migrating next, then Point of Sale and Inbox. This is the first big-company reversal of a cross-platform bet justified explicitly by agent economics, and the checkpoint-plus-adversarial-review pattern is something a solo builder can copy for any large port.
