OpenAI withdrew from the Caltech Mathathon after 771 mathematicians signed a letter accusing AI labs of research misconduct
The open letter, published September 10 by current and former Caltech mathematicians, asks organizers to suspend the October 30 event, where Anthropic and OpenAI were supplying $2 million in AI credits for solving open problems by prompting LLMs. It says AI companies take results for prestige and leave the unpaid verification work to the math community.
