CROSS-CATEGORY: Agent Workloads Broke Flat-Rate AI Pricing in Productivity, Data Infrastructure and the Model Labs in the Same Week
On September 10 Raycast replaced rate-limited AI with metered credits, saying multi-step agent tasks that write and run code cost more than it can subsidize. The same day OpenAI paused new $200/month Pro sign-ups because Astra demand is straining capacity. Snowflake guided product gross margin down to 74.0% (from 76.4% a year earlier) because AI workloads carry lower contribution margin, even as AI drove about half its acceleration to 37% growth. The shared signal across a launcher app, a data warehouse and a frontier lab is that agent usage makes inference cost variable enough that bundling it into a flat seat price no longer works.
