PlanetScale Previews Neki, Sharded Postgres That Keeps Real Postgres on Every Shard
PlanetScale announced Neki on September 10: routers handle query parsing and distributed planning, shard groups have one primary and two or more replicas across three availability zones, pooling sidecars run next to each instance, and a JSON topology file maps logical tables to shards. Apps connect over the standard Postgres wire protocol, so existing drivers and ORMs still work. It is in platform preview and not recommended for production, and pricing was not given. It goes directly at the Postgres scale-out market that Citus, Supabase and Neon customers hit once they outgrow a single machine.
