Pathogen Researchers Push Back on Anthropic's Bioweapons Case Studies: Scripps Virologist Calls Them 'Just Basic Research'

Science (AAAS) reported on September 14 that Anthropic's five pathogen-research case studies from its September threat report have divided biosecurity experts. Scripps Research virologist Kristian Andersen dismissed most or all of the flagged experiments as ordinary basic research, while biosecurity researcher Filippa Lentzos urged resisting both extremes in reading the cases. This is the first substantive expert dissent on the report that made Anthropic the first major lab to publicly say it can no longer rely on a capability gap between its models and the expertise needed to assist bioweapons development.
