Stripe Launches Machine Payments Protocol (MPP) — Open Standard for AI Agent Payments
Stripe and Tempo co-authored MPP, an open internet-native protocol letting AI agents pay services programmatically without human intervention — covering microtransactions, recurring payments, stablecoin and fiat via Shared Payment Tokens. Built on Stripe's existing PaymentIntents API in a few lines of code; early adopters include Browserbase (pay-per-headless-browser-session), PostalForm (agents printing physical mail), and Parallel Web Systems. Represents the first major payments-infrastructure primitive purpose-built for the agent economy, with the same Stripe fraud, tax, and settlement stack used for human payments.
