OpenAI publishes a Custom GPT retirement FAQ with hard dates and points users to Plugins
OpenAI now explicitly documents that Custom GPTs are being retired. Migration is targeted to begin September 17, 2026, creation of new custom GPTs ends September 25, 2026, and affected Enterprise workspace retirement is planned for December 11, 2026. The recommended replacement is Plugins, which bundle reusable instructions with connected apps. Existing GPTs remain usable until retirement, and rollout will not reach every account or workspace simultaneously. Anyone with production workflows sitting in a Custom GPT has about ten days before they can no longer build new ones.
