Chughtai, a research engineer on AGI safety and alignment who left Google DeepMind in July 2026 according to his LinkedIn, wrote on September 14 that 'I earnestly believe that AI has the potential to kill us all, and that we might be running out of time to avoid this outcome.' He called for coordination 'to avoid this manic race between AI companies' and for pacing development to a speed where emerging risks get addressed before extreme harm. It lands directly on top of Amodei's slowdown push, which drew rare agreement from both Musk and Altman over the weekend.
