CROSS-CATEGORY: Four BI Vendors in Two Weeks Have Moved the Dashboard From a Destination to an Agent Output

dbt Labs open-sourced a YAML dashboard language on Sept 14, Databox relaunched its whole product as agentic analytics with Genie as the primary interface on Sept 9, IBM shipped Cognos Analytics as a Service with BI agents on AWS on Sept 2, and OpenAI's Data agent in ChatGPT Work shipped Sept 10 with the ability to build dashboards inside Omni, Oracle BI, Power BI, Sigma, Tableau and ThoughtSpot. The common move is that nobody is competing on the dashboard canvas anymore, they are competing to be the thing that writes into someone else's canvas. For builders the durable asset is the semantic layer and the metric definitions, not the visualization tier.
