The Pragmatic Engineer reports OpenAI engineers now open roughly 10x more pull requests than six months ago, with Codex use in non-engineering teams going 0% to 90% in four months
Gergely Orosz's inside look at OpenAI's engineering names Venkat Venkataramani (VP Applied Infra), Sulman Choudhry (Head of Engineering, ChatGPT), Joe Gershenson (Core Agent) and others, and describes internal agent systems including Perf Factory for automated performance monitoring, Sevbot for incident response, and a Synthetics A/B framework. The headline numbers are a ~10x rise in PRs per engineer over about six months and Codex adoption in non-engineering departments moving from near zero to 90% between February and June 2026. The bottleneck has shifted to the build-test-deploy pipeline, which is now carrying dramatically more load than the humans generating the work.
