GitLab.com ties API rate limits to subscription tier and names agent workloads as the reason
GitLab announced on 17 September that rate limits will be realigned to Free, Premium and Ultimate tiers, applied per user and per top-level group, effective 19 October 2026 for the free tier and unauthenticated requests and January 2027 for Premium and Ultimate. Unauthenticated requests get capped at 60 per hour per IP. GitLab names the driver explicitly, saying predictable limits keep the platform fast for everyone including 'the automation and agent workloads teams are building on the platform', and that it expects load to grow several times over this year. The exact per-plan numbers live in the docs rather than the post. This is the second forge-side metering change this month after the Internet Archive's Wayback rate limiting, and anything running CI agents against GitLab should check its tier before October.
