Claude Code v2.1.278 Moves the Auto-Mode Safety Classifier Server-Side and Stops Billing For It
Anthropic published claude-code v2.1.278 at 03:10 UTC on 2026-09-19. Auto mode's classifier checks on shell commands and network requests now run as part of the session's own server request on Enterprise plans, Claude API accounts, Claude Platform on AWS, Bedrock, Google Cloud Agent Platform and Microsoft Foundry, and are not charged when the server performs them; a new Auto mode server row in /status reads Enabled or Disabled. The docs page confirms the fallback is the old billed local classifier and that an LLM gateway stripping the safeguards request field or the safeguard_results response field is the most common cause, with CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_SERVER=0 as the opt-out. Pro, Max and Team plans never see the notice.
