CROSS-CATEGORY: Support Automation Hit Its Demand Ceiling the Same Week Two Vendors Doubled Down on It
Oracle cut Customer Support Services staff on September 14 to fund a $70B capex year, and Hostinger retired its 91%-resolution chatbot on September 19 for an agent that acts on customer infrastructure, while a September 18 writeup of Gartner data pulled the other direction: of 3,566 customers surveyed in February and March 2026, 87% considered human access essential and 84% wanted human interaction available, and by July 2026 customers were roughly three times more likely to use a third-party generative AI service than a company's own chatbot for service questions. Gartner also found in April that 85% of service leaders were expanding human agent responsibilities as AI absorbed routine contacts. The deflection number and the trust number are now moving in opposite directions, and Hostinger's "AI CX Engineer" role is the only structural answer anyone shipped this week.
