The security researcher's essay, on the HN front page today, argues that models absorb everything online without distinguishing GPL, copyleft or Creative Commons ShareAlike, and that the derivative output almost never carries the source's restrictions forward. His counterfactual is that without open source, cloud services would be a closed oligopoly closer to AOL or CompuServe and several times more expensive. He closes by calling the current moment a "dark digital age" and asking for a new agreement between authors, programmers and artists about what gets shared and under what rules.
