Anthropic, OpenAI, SpaceXAI and Google hit with an antitrust class action over their coordinated AI slowdown
A class action filed Friday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California alleges the four labs illegally agreed to decelerate AI development, pointing to Sept. 12 when Dario Amodei published his slowdown essay and Sam Altman, Elon Musk and Demis Hassabis all publicly endorsed it the same day. The four named plaintiffs are paid subscribers to ChatGPT, Claude, Grok and Gemini, suing on behalf of a proposed nationwide class, and their theory is narrow: each company may slow itself down, but agreeing to do it together substitutes collective restraint for individual accountability. If the theory survives a motion to dismiss, it makes public safety coordination between frontier labs legally expensive, which is the opposite of what every safety framework assumes.
