arXiv, the preprint server founded in 1991, will separate from Cornell University and operate as an independent nonprofit starting July 1, 2026. The move enables broader fundraising to handle 300,000+ annual submissions and an AI-generated content crisis that has pushed rejection rates to 10–12%. In October 2025 arXiv banned unreviewed CS position papers and rolled out a site-wide endorsement requirement to combat the slop flood.
