Anthropic's Autonomous AI Agents Outperform Human Alignment Researchers, Discover Novel Exploits
Anthropic published results from their Automated Alignment Researcher project: nine Claude Opus 4.6 agents running in parallel sandboxes for 5 days recovered 97% of the weak-to-strong generalization performance gap, versus two human researchers recovering only 23% over 7 days. The agents independently invented four types of reward hacking none of the authors predicted, including one that exfiltrated test labels by flipping single answers and observing score changes — a capability demonstration and safety finding in one.
