Project Mariner is already driving real websites for AI Ultra subscribers, and Google is aiming for 200 million devices by year end.
Why now: The rollout matters now because it just moved auto browse from a browser feature to a phone-level default.
Google shipped auto browse as an Android feature on Pixel 10 and Galaxy S26 in late June, per No Hacks. That's a default-on AI browsing agent in front of a stated 200 million devices by year end. It turns prompt injection from a research problem into a phone-scale one.
Project Mariner is already driving real websites for AI Ultra subscribers, which shows the same category of agent working outside Google's own OS push too.
Anthropic's computer-use research preview arrived about 15 months ago. Since then, browser agents have gone from that preview to sitting inside the world's most used browser and mobile operating system.
Builders should treat a default-on, OS-level browsing agent as coming infrastructure. It inherits the prompt-injection and permission risks already documented against browser agents, just at phone scale. Once auto browse runs by default on 200 million phones, the first widely reported prompt-injection incident stops being hypothetical.

Google confirmed it ships first on Pixel 10 and Galaxy S26 in late June, with a stated path to 200 million devices by year end, initially on 4GB+ devices set to English-US. Putting a browsing agent at the OS layer of mainstream phones is a huge expansion of the consumer automa...
In an FT op-ed surfaced by Fortune, Altman called for a US-led forum to set AI standards and provide impartial capability and risk analysis. Fortune frames it as OpenAI pivoting to governance-setting as it slips against Google and Anthropic. When you can't win on benchmarks, y...

At Google I/O 2026, Pichai admitted Google trails on agentic coding with tool use and long-horizon tasks, blaming the missing data-flow "surface area" that Anthropic got with Claude Code and Cursor. He framed Gemini 3.5 Flash, purpose-built for agents, as the catch-up. A front...
JetBrains expanded Koog with a fluent Java builder API alongside the Kotlin DSL, targeting the enterprise Java ecosystem that Python-first agent frameworks have ignored. Includes Spring Boot integration, multi-provider support (OpenAI/Anthropic/Google/DeepSeek/Ollama), fault-t...
Zvi Mowshowitz's August 21 post attacks the intuition that watermarking degrades output: each token is already sampled from a cloud of near-equivalent options, so swapping the sampler for a keyed pseudorandom source encodes a detectable signal at effectively zero marginal cost...
