Claude Code adds an org-wide default model setting
Admins can now lock every developer to the same model, closing the gap where a stray config was quietly the real bug.
Why now: The setting appears in Claude Code's update as of July 2.
Story
Claude Code now lets admins pin one default model for the whole org, per Claude Code's latest update.
That matters because config drift stays invisible until it breaks something. A teammate quietly running an older or different model turns into a bug nobody else can reproduce.
The fix isn't a new workflow, just one setting. An admin sets the org's default once, and configs stop drifting from it instead of each developer picking their own.
The differences between model versions are often small: a different formatting choice, a slightly off explanation, one extra edge case handled or missed. None of it looks like a model problem, so nobody thinks to check the model.
The update points to Sonnet 5 as the model worth standardizing on. Before this setting, that meant trusting every developer to keep their own config current, and that's easy to let slide.
Half the "it works on my machine" tickets floating around a team's Claude Code use were probably never prompt problems. They were unnoticed model-version mismatches, and pinning the default is the actual fix.
The setting appears in Claude Code's update as of July 2.
