The July 1 update adds audit logs and Excel, PowerPoint read-write, betting hosting agents beats losing to them.
Why now: The dateline is Notion's July 1 release, when its workspace first let outside agents like Claude operate inside it.
Notion added External Agents on July 1, letting Claude and Cursor read and edit inside a workspace, per Notion's release notes. That changes the question from which app to open to which workspace an agent lives in.
The same release adds multi-agent workflows, read-write access to Excel and PowerPoint files, and audit logging that tracks what custom agents do once they're inside. Audit logging is the tell. You don't log agent activity unless you expect it to become routine. And you don't build for that unless you plan to stay the system of record, no matter which agent is typing.
Notion's bet: hosting other companies' agents beats building a worse one in-house or getting replaced by a better one. If agents are going to do the work anyway, better to be the place they do it than the tool they replace.
The real test is whether more collaboration tools make the same move. If "bring your own agent" becomes standard across the category, Notion's audit logging stops being a differentiator and starts being table stakes. If it doesn't spread, Notion's early move buys time as the default surface for agents touching Excel and PowerPoint files.
