Forward-deployed engineer hiring jumped from 10% to 70% of firms

Demand for forward-deployed engineers went from 5-10% of companies to 70% in two quarters, per TechCrunch.

Only about 2,000 engineers in the US combine the sector knowledge, client gravitas, and applied AI experience this role needs, per Christian & Timbers. Generative AI projects fail 95% of the time without that mix, according to MIT research cited in the same piece.

The largest consulting firms told TechCrunch they need to grow FDE headcount tenfold, into teams running 20 to 100 people.

Pay reflects the scarcity, running about $200K all-in at seed-stage companies and climbing to $450-550K+ at Series C, per the piece.

Palantir is the highest-volume hirer, followed by OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Databricks, Scale AI, Mistral, and Cohere. Every one of those sells AI as a product, and each is staffing up on humans to make it work in the field.

That pattern says something about the products themselves. A platform that needs a person on-site for 60 to 180 days before a client sees value isn't self-serve software.

TechCrunch doesn't say what happens to these teams once a deployment stabilizes: whether FDE headcount rotates to new accounts or stays pinned to one client.
