Business Insider asked seven finance and AI experts the same question and got the opposite answer: keep saving.
Why now: Bessent's Fox News answer and Business Insider's survey of experts are both circulating in coverage from July 31, placing his endorsement next to the pushback directly.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent agreed that AI-driven abundance could make retirement saving unnecessary, disputing only Elon Musk's timeline for it, in a Fox News interview. Asked whether he shared Musk's prediction, Bessent said, "I do, but I think I would change the timeline." He cited a specific number: a quarter of the jobs that exist in 2026 didn't exist in 2000.
That's a sitting Treasury Secretary, not a startup founder, telling a national television audience that saving for retirement might stop mattering.
Business Insider ran the same Musk claim past seven personal finance and AI experts, separately. Same question, opposite answer. All seven said to ignore it and keep saving. That's a clean split between the official who sets economic policy and the people who study personal finance for a living.
Bessent's job-turnover number describes how fast the economy replaces old work with new work. It doesn't say whether AI-created jobs pay as well, arrive on time, or reach the people who are saving for retirement. Business Insider's seven experts weren't arguing that jobs stay static. They were arguing that nobody should stop saving on the strength of a prediction about when abundance arrives.
I don't have a forecast on AI-driven abundance, and neither does anyone else with a straight face. I do have an opinion about a Treasury Secretary endorsing that prediction on air. If the timeline is wrong, the people who acted on his answer pay for it, not him.
