Google Ships a Canonical Skills Repo on GitHub

Google published its own skills repository for its products on GitHub. The repo gained 305 stars in a single day, per GitHub's star count, pushing the total to 15,982.

The repo packages skills for Google's own APIs and tools. It's a vendor bundle arriving alongside the community skill collections that already dominate this category. When the platform vendor ships the canonical version of its API skills, the community version stops looking like an asset and starts looking like upkeep.

The project is Apache-2.0 licensed and mostly Python. It went up on GitHub on March 31 and got pushed again on August 6.

The community tax

Nobody has to abandon the collections covering the same Google APIs. But someone has to keep them current against whatever Google ships next, and Google now does that job for free.

My bet: community collections that only mirror Google's own APIs lose contributors within months. The ones with something Google didn't ship, custom integrations, opinionated defaults, keep growing. Watch which category the surviving forks fall into.
