Three Companies Open-Sourced Agent Runtimes in 72 Hours

Cloudflare put its internal agent operating system on GitHub between August 5 and 7, one of three runtime releases in the same three-day window. Herdr relicensed its terminal runtime to Apache-2.0 and announced it's joining YC's F26 batch. HAR shipped an open-source multi-agent harness as a free CLI and MCP server.

None of them are charging for the software that runs the agents. Cloudflare had used its system internally since May before releasing it, per the company's blog post. Herdr's relicensing move came bundled with its YC announcement rather than a pricing plan. HAR's harness is free through both the CLI and the MCP server, per its Product Hunt listing.

Meta pushed the same signal from the model side, pairing Muse Code with a data-for-discount tier rather than a runtime fee.

Nothing costs money at the orchestration layer right now. That's the tell. When three teams give away the same layer of the stack in 72 hours, that's not generosity. It's agreement the margin isn't there.

The money's one layer down, in inference cost. Or one layer up, in governance and verification of what the agents actually do once running. Watch who tries to charge for either of those next: that's where the real product gets built.
