Stratechery argues the EU's rule is philosophically wrong, but Anthropic built one global watermark instead of separate versions for different regions.
Why now: Stratechery surfaced both the EU mandate and Anthropic's global watermark response in the same August 14 roundup.
Anthropic began watermarking every Claude text output worldwide, not just for users covered by the EU's new labeling mandate, per Stratechery's August 14 roundup.
That's a compliance rule builders outside the EU never voted on. Anthropic built it because segmenting output by region and maintaining separate builds costs more than treating every user the same.
Thompson called the mandate a terrible idea. He compared it to how ideas have spread across centuries without a compliance label attached. Stratechery's post doesn't name the EU regulation behind the mandate or say when it takes effect.
Thompson makes a similar point elsewhere in the piece. Nvidia's new long-duration financing mechanism bridges to sustainable AI revenue, he argues, while also expanding what he calls the blast radius of a bubble. Both cases are about paying for uniformity up front instead of adjusting later.
Watch whether other providers follow the same path once one mandate forces a global build.

In the August 14 Stratechery weekly, Thompson argues the well-covered compute and power constraints are joined by an under-discussed capital constraint: "If AI is as valuable as it seems, then it should pay for itself, but that hasn't happened yet." He reads Nvidia's new fundi...
On June 9, Anthropic released Claude Fable 5 and Mythos 5 across Claude.ai, Claude Code (CLI and web), and Cowork. The spec sheet: 1M-token context, 128K max output, a January 2026 knowledge cutoff, and pricing at $10 input / $50 output per million tokens. That's double Opus 4...
Rolling out July 7 through July 9, Cowork went mobile and web: sessions and files persist to the Claude account, background work continues after the laptop closes, scheduled tasks run with no device online, and approvals can be granted from your phone. Beta started with Max su...
Anthropic's status page logged elevated errors from 04:50 UTC to 07:36 UTC covering Mythos 5, Fable 5 and Opus 5, resolved at 08:30 UTC, with Opus 5 and Fable 5 stabilizing first. (r/ClaudeAI) The recurring complaint in that thread is that failed requests still consume the fiv...
Anthropic shipped this August 18 alongside Cowork reaching mobile and web for all paid accounts. Claude can now send Gmail messages and manage Drive files, not just read them. (The Verge) That's a threat-model change, not a convenience change. A prompt-injected email is now on...
John Gruber's Daring Fireball post drew 368 points and 348 comments, with most technical commenters rejecting his prose-quality argument: the watermark only biases high-entropy tokens where several continuations are near-equiprobable, and Google's A/B tests reportedly showed n...
