The weights have been public since late July, but GitHub's hosted rollout beat local runtimes to the model by weeks.
Why now: GitHub's changelog dated the Copilot rollout to August 13, weeks after K3's weights went up in late July.
GitHub shipped K3 to every Copilot tier on August 13, per its changelog.
Developers who waited for community-built local runtimes to catch up got the model through Copilot first, weeks before those runtimes could run it at all. GitHub's hosted rollout became the fast path to K3, not the open-weight download.
K3's weights went public in late July. It's the largest open-weight model released so far. Local inference engines still took weeks to add support. Weight availability wasn't the bottleneck holding K3 back. Runtime support was, and GitHub's own integration got there first.
Sub-1B models make up 83% of local downloads, and that's where quantization allocation research is actually paying off right now. K3 sits at the frontier end, far from where those local gains are landing.
A model that's open in name but takes weeks before an inference engine can run it locally is closed in practice for anyone without a hosted subscription. Watch how long the next big open-weight release takes to run outside a platform like Copilot. That gap, not the license, is becoming the real measure of how open a model is.

An open-weight Chinese frontier model is now a dropdown option in Microsoft's coding product. That happened before anyone finished characterizing what the model does. GitHub's changelog dated August 6 makes Kimi K3 generally available across Copilot Pro, Pro+, Max, Business an...
43.3% on Frontier-Bench v0.1. Opus 4.8 scored 18.7%. That's not an incremental bump, that's the same benchmark with a different shape of answer. Anthropic released Claude Opus 5 on July 24 at $5/$25 per million input/output tokens, exactly half of Fable 5's $10/$50, while matc...
The August 10 weekly release rolls Moonshot's 2.8T-parameter, 896-expert open-weight model out across all tiers, and Microsoft's own MAI-Code-1.1-Flash started rolling out with native image understanding (GitHub Changelog). Copilot is now the fastest legitimate route to K3 for...
The July 30 changelog closed the hosted model-catalog and playground service that let developers prototype against multiple LLMs from GitHub directly. If you prototyped against Models endpoints, this is a migration event, not a skim. The surrounding changelog items (Copilot up...
The sunset notice is short and it doesn't hedge. Code freeze July 29. Repository archived August 10. Core team gone August 31. npm and Docker packages deprecated. Flowise has 55,186 stars and 24,850 forks under Apache-2.0, and the team wrote its own cause of death: developers...
Anthropic invented a file convention. It's now shipping GA inside a competitor's product. Nobody wrote a spec, nobody held a standards meeting, it just happened. On July 29, GitHub made agent skills and MCP server support generally available in Copilot code review for all Pro,...
