agenttrail reads session files the agents already write to disk, so it needs no API keys or agent-side changes to work.
Why now: The project was still receiving commits as of August 25.
agenttrail tails the session files Claude Code, Codex and Cursor already write to disk and shows each agent's plan, tool calls and file edits live. It's MIT-licensed, needs no API keys, and makes no changes to the agents it watches.
That matters because most people running coding agents run more than one, and nothing else shows what every session is doing at once.
Because it only reads files instead of calling an API, agenttrail works the moment any of the three agents is installed. It also watches several sessions side by side, rather than one at a time.
Among GitHub repos tagged for agent observability created since late July, agenttrail is the only one to pass 50 stars. That's a low bar for a category this actively used. It suggests most builders running several agents are flying blind or writing their own logging.
Worth watching is whether agenttrail adds support for more agents as new coding tools appear. A filesystem-tailing approach can extend to anything that writes session state to disk. Whether it can hold that lead against a dashboard built by one of the agent vendors, with API access agenttrail doesn't have, is still open.
