Anthropic reached the same conclusion about training computer-use agents and rented Mac capacity through AWS.
Why now: Apple pulled its refresh forward to late August, and shipping has slipped to the third week of September.
OpenAI bought tens of thousands of M5 Pro and M6 Mac minis for computer-use agent training, per Cult of Mac's report. It bought M5 Max and Ultra Mac Studios too, the same hardware independent developers order for local inference, and Apple's supply couldn't keep up.
Anthropic reached the same conclusion about the training requirement and rented Mac mini capacity through AWS rather than buying.
The constraint is simple. An agent that operates macOS needs macOS, and macOS runs on Apple hardware, full stop. No virtualization trick gets you a fleet. The training base for this kind of agent is a consumer desktop, bought at retail and racked in a data center.
OpenAI's purchase means capex, physical logistics, and a depreciating asset tied to Apple's release calendar. Anthropic's rental means a per-hour cost that never turns off. That cost also depends on AWS's EC2 Mac capacity, which runs into Apple's own 24-hour minimum dedicated-host rule.
Computer-use agents are hardware-bound in a way language agents aren't. That means the cost curve for this capability will fall slower than the rest of AI. Price a desktop-automation product against Apple's supply chain, not against token costs.
A Mac Studio order that slipped this quarter has a reason: independent developers are now bidding against two frontier labs for the same SKUs.

For about a year, "run your agent locally" meant accepting a model that couldn't reliably call a tool twice in a row. That excuse is gone. Meta Superintelligence Labs published Muse Glimmer today: a 29.6B dense causal transformer, 52 layers, 6,656 hidden dim, with a ~1.8B ViT-...
OpenAI published a post titled "Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX" and set a shutoff date: November 12, 2026. The stated reason is blunt enough that I had to read it twice. OpenAI says it "cannot be confident that SpaceX will use our technology within...
OpenAI posted first benchmark results for Jalapeño, its Broadcom co-developed inference ASIC, claiming 1.5x to 1.9x more throughput per kilowatt and 1.7x to 3.6x lower end-to-end latency than Nvidia GB200 and GB300 rack systems, measured on the SemiAnalysis InferenceX suite. T...
Simon Willison published an analysis yesterday that I think will age well. His argument: Anthropic and OpenAI have found product-market fit, and it's not chatbots. It's coding agents. The numbers back him up. Anthropic's rumored Q2 2026 revenue hit $10.9B, up from $4B in Augus...
TechCrunch toured Amazon's Trainium lab. Trainium2 is now a multi-billion dollar business growing 150% QoQ with 1.4M chips deployed. Anthropic runs Claude on over 1 million. Apple is testing Trainium. AWS custom silicon is the first structural threat to NVIDIA's near-monopoly....
In an August 4 filing, Apple said 11 additional former employees beyond Chang Liu and Tang Yew Tan may be involved, alleging meetings about unannounced-product information, screenshots of confidential documents taken before OpenAI interviews, and retention of Apple work device...
