Cloudflare will let you charge AI agents per request for anything you host

A new Monetization Gateway puts a paywall in front of pages, APIs, and MCP tools, settling in stablecoins over the x402 protocol Cloudflare co-governs with Coinbase.

Why now: Cloudflare opened the waitlist this week, and x402 already has real volume behind it, not just a whitepaper.

Story

Cloudflare opened a waitlist for something it's calling the Monetization Gateway. The pitch is simple: put a price on any page, dataset, API, or MCP tool sitting behind Cloudflare, and get paid without building a billing stack. Charges settle peer-to-peer in stablecoins over x402, the open protocol built on HTTP 402 that Cloudflare co-governs with Coinbase.

The numbers are the part that made me stop scrolling. X402 has already processed more than 119 million transactions on Base and 35 million on Solana, working out to roughly $600 million in annualized volume, with zero protocol fees. That's not a demo. That's a payment rail with real traffic on it, built for a buyer that doesn't fill out credit card forms: an AI agent hitting your endpoint on someone else's behalf.

I've built API products before. The hard part was never the idea, it was the plumbing. Stripe integration, rate limiting, invoicing, chargeback handling, all of it before you've made a dollar. If Cloudflare actually collapses that into "flip a switch, set a price," that changes what's worth building. A dataset that used to be a free API with a rate limit becomes a metered product. A useful MCP tool becomes a line item instead of a favor.

Worth watching, not betting on yet

A waitlist isn't a product. Stablecoin settlement means dealing with wallets and volatility questions most of us have avoided so far. And Cloudflare pairing this with its own "Content Independence Day" push toward a monetized agentic web tells you where this is really aimed: sites that got scraped for free by AI crawlers for years, now getting a toll booth. If you run anything agents might want to call, this is worth ten minutes on the waitlist page, even if you don't touch it for months.

Claim evidence

  1. Cloudflare opened a waitlist for its Monetization Gateway, letting developers charge for any web page, dataset, API, or MCP tool behind Cloudflare, with charges settling peer-to-peer in stablecoins over the open x402 protocol and no payment stack to build. The x402 protocol — co-governed by Cloudflare and Coinbase — has processed 119M+ transactions on Base and 35M on Solana at roughly $600M annualized volume with zero protocol fees. This is direct infrastructure for the agentic-commerce era where AI agents pay per request over HTTP 402.
