Fetching from the wire…

Each company sold as a standalone subscription, and each now lives inside a platform that doesn't bill by the seat.
Why now: Bending Spoons, Klaviyo, and OpenAI signed three unrelated acquisitions within a single window, Aug. 4 to Aug. 8.
Bending Spoons agreed on Aug. 4 to buy Airtable for $1.285 billion, 2.7 times its annual revenue, the first of three unrelated acquisitions inside a single week.
For any founder or investor betting an AI-native subscription app will fetch a growth-stage multiple at exit, three deals in five days say otherwise. Each seller got priced like a feature headed into someone else's platform, not like a standalone company still compounding.
The buyers have nothing else in common. Bending Spoons is a public app consolidator, Klaviyo sells e-commerce marketing software, and OpenAI runs a frontier model lab. Between Aug. 4 and Aug. 8, each one bought a company that sold itself as a standalone subscription. Each folded that company into a product nobody buys seat by seat.
Klaviyo's deal, announced in its own newsroom on Aug. 5, is for Agency, an AI customer-success startup. OpenAI's is for NextSlide, a presentation startup. A related report says OpenAI put NextSlide's team to work on ChatGPT's own presentation features, not running it as a separate app.
Airtable's price, per TechCrunch, reads like a mature software company's multiple, not an AI-native product still growing into its valuation.
None of this means the AI app market is struggling. It means the exit ramp for a mid-market AI-native subscription runs through absorption, priced by the acquirer's category, not the target's growth curve. The next test: whether another AI subscription app that sells this cycle lands closer to Airtable's multiple than to whatever it last raised at.
